Graham Russell - Air Supply

I was born in Nottingham, England on June 11, 1950 and from a very early age became fascinated with words and book, quickly making the transition from Noddy & Big Ears to D.H. Lawrence, who by chance was from Nottingham too! I began writing poetry at 10 and with the help of the piano in the front room, put simple sounds to the verse. I taught myself drums and guitar at 13, heavily influenced by the Beatles. Played in several bands in my early teens, but wanted to play original songs. I moved to Australia in 1968 and played folk clubs and coffee bars for pennies, but still writing songs furiously. In 1975, I landed a part in Jesus Christ Superstar in Sydney, meeting Russell Hitchcock on the first day of rehearsals. When I sprained my ankle, he helped carry me to the "washers", which is supposed to stop the swelling, thinking I had just blown it on the very first day, but amazingly enough, I wasn't fired and a great friendship had begun. Two years touring Australia and New Zealand, brought an opportunity for our growing friendship and our possible future in music. Using the wave of success that "Superstar" was generating, Russell and I conceived Air Supply and had a hit single before the end of the tour. 1977 brought an awakening that would change everything; opening for Rod Stewart in the US and Canada. It would be another frustrating three years though for Air Supply to make our mark within the US. On the brink of seeing no hope for my music, I returned to England in search of ways to market my songs. Near to giving up entirely, I read in a trade magazine, "Lost in Love" was in the US charts, released by Arista Records. Following the success of "Lost in Love", was a string of top five hits, Billboard magazine citing us as the most successful vocal group of the 80’s. Air Supply continues to perform to capacity audiences around the world, 30 years later. We feel fortunate in the ever-changing music industry to be able to do that which we love and to bring our fans something from a very deep place.
